Case Study – Network Rail Remote Radio Installation

Project Focus – Network Rail

Products Utilised – TRBOnet and Swift IP

Network Rail is the owner and infrastructure manager of most of the railway network in Great Britain covering 20,000 miles of track, and 40,000 bridges and tunnels, efficiency is vital.

Most recently £200m has been invested in the railway in Derby. This project was the biggest rail investment in Derby station for decades and is a key part of the Midland Main Line upgrade which will improve journeys to and through Derby station by reducing bottlenecks and enabling quicker and more efficient passage of rail traffic.*

Communications between their newly designed signal box and the station platform at the Derby site had proven unreliable during coverage tests. The team at Network Rail required a solution that could push out two-way radio communication messages swiftly to enable responsive working and ensure they maintained a high level of customer satisfaction when dealing with queries and the departures & arrivals of trains.

As an existing Motorola Solutions Analogue client Network Rail contacted DCRS a Motorola Solutions and Achilles RISQS partner to discuss the probability of providing a dedicated and robust wireless radio communications solution without RF being located in their control room.

Network Rail adopted a TRBONet and Swift IP Gateway solution as recommended by DCRS. The TRBONet Swift IP Gateway is ideal for user scenarios of this nature when an IP connection is required in a remote location, but a repeater connection is unavailable.

TRBONet Swift has enabled the signal box to be able to communicate quickly with the platform staff via a desk mic situated on their ergonomic desk, while the fanless PC installed underneath ensures there is no noise within the environment, this was a significant factor in the design of this two-way radio communications system.

This radio solution has removed the need for additional communication devices; meaning platform staff can act quickly on every request thus improving customer satisfaction. This system gives greater peace of mind to Network Rail that the team at either end can be reached at a critical time whilst providing a route to a fully digital radio system to help future-proof their business.

The Swift gateway enables a system owner to connect a remote base radio to TRBOnet Enterprise or Plus without the need to install a computer. Depending on the system design, the gateway can route voice and data from and to one or many connected TRBOnet Servers over IP.

ADVANTAGES AND BENEFITS

  • You can monitor remote sites from a central location
  • LAN connection enables multiple gateways
  • Enables patching between analogue and digital channels
  • TRBOnet shows the connection status, temperature & sensor info
