Cygnet Health Care safeguard workers with MOTOTRBO™ radios

Cygnet Health Care Hospitals is located all across the UK and offers a wide range of services for individuals with different mental health needs, learning disabilities. They offer their patients a purposeful therapeutic environment, where the focus is set on maximising positive outcomes, which improves the chances of recovery.

The Radio Communication Challenge

Being such an established healthcare institution, ever since the 1988’s, Cygnet Health cares for many patients. Thus it is one of their main priorities to keep their staff and patients safe, whilst continuing to maintain their high level of care.

Unfortunately, the hospital’s mixed manufacturer analogue system began to show resilience issues, proving to be unreliable and making it more and more difficult to exchange important information every day. Cygnet Hospital knew it was finally time to look for a new, future-proof fully integrated two-way radio solution, which could incorporate both voice and data, as well as be able to provide reliable communications to enable any member of staff to be located on their site both indoors and outdoors. It was also important to ensure a smooth installation of the new two-way radio and repeater system, not disrupting the hospital teams to continue their robust communications between their six individual wards, first aid and management.

The Motorola solution

Once the DCRS team had finished their site testing, they put together a list of communication system recommendations. To find the best fit for their personnel, Cygnet Hospital decided to run short-term trials, to see which radio supplier’s solutions were preferred. More footprint coverage tests were carried out, and it was clear that they delivered better coverage, increased call capacity and gave a crisp clear audio performance.

Following extensive trials, the hospital had decided to strike a deal with DCRS. Their MOTOTRBO digital radio equipment was chosen to revolutionise communication among staff members and bolster the 24/7 security measures. This decision to upgrade their communication systems offered several advantages: extended emergency response features, improved battery life quality for more dependable patient monitoring and swift exchange of information – all in one comprehensive solution.

With multiple elements to consider, the hospital needed a solution that would empower the entire staff. After carefully assessing the situation they chose an array of MOTOTRBO products: over 70 digital two-way radios, sized perfectly for their needs and helping personnel stay connected yet flexible. DP4600s for all runners and management, DP4400s specifically assigned to first aid teams on each ward, plus individualised DP1400s equipped with every member of the nursing team.

“With broken messages and dead spots, the hospital was in dire need of modernising their two-way radio system, and the MOTOTRBO range ticked every box they highlighted to us. Giving them a safe, stable platform to communicate on” said Graham Stokes, Business Development Manager, DCRS.

When personalising the system, the management team decided upon individual IDs and colour-coded aerials for each user group to allow for ease of identification. All of the radios were programmed with an auto transmit, also known as an open mic function which is activated when their designated emergency button is pressed. This allows for all personnel to be notified of any emergencies or urgent assistance requests.
