Andromeda is a cycling event organised in Velothon, Wales. A lot of cyclists love the thrill of the hilly track as well as the picturesque views. However, the rough terrain of the event’s perimeter makes it more challenging to establish strong and reliable communications, to ensure the safety of everyone, from the participants to the organisers.
Previously utilising analogue radio equipment, the event organisers soon found out they could not always cover every part of the course. The two-way radio systems made it difficult to deliver standard broadcasts to pass over information to the field teams, therefore it was not always possible to make them aware of the cyclists approaching the next area of the route. It has also made it hard to send emergency messages or requests for urgent assistance. Another issue that the analogue radio equipment has brought upon the Andromeda team, was the difficulty to inform the organisers of any emergencies or need for urgent assistance.
Therefore when designing the communication systems for Andromeda in Wales, DCRS had to ensure those new systems would improve the efficiency and speed of transmissions.
With its stunning and rugged mountainous landscape, Wales provides a unique challenge when it comes to establishing large-scale event communication systems. This bumpy terrain brings up another challenge for establishing large-scale event communication systems. Our team of engineers had to find a way to install stable two-way radio systems, which would keep the staff and organisers connected throughout the whole perimeter and not be affected by its rough terrain.
DCRS had to solve the integration of new two-way radio systems. The previously used analogue radios had to be changed and our team ensured that this new two-way radio system adaptation process was smooth and seamless.
The event itself welcomes approximately 15,000 cyclists, which include sportive riders, ironmen in training, charity fundraisers or simply cycling enthusiasts that like to take on a challenge. Thus it is safe to state that stable and strong communication is crucial for an event of this magnitude, and all of the organisers, including Field Teams, Peloton Cars, Traffic Management and Emergency Services, require a reliable system that will give a coverage footprint of 175km.
