Tilbury Green Power Plant Choose MOTOTRBOâ„¢ to connect widely dispersed teams

In 2009, following the submission of an independent Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and extensive consultation, the Secretary of State granted consent for the construction and operation of the Tilbury Green Power waste wood-fuelled power plant. The Plant is located in the Port of Tilbury, Essex.

The Project comprises of two separate phases of development. It will utilise around 270,000 tonnes of waste wood sourced from the region to produce up to 319,000 MWh of renewable electricity each year – enough to supply around 97,000 average homes.

Challenge

Tilbury Green Power Plant communications infrastructure is critical to the safe management of the site with staff widely dispersed, requiring fast, high availability communication. Their goal was to select the most productive and cost-effective solution providing quality of service whilst being future proof to introduce data if required at a later date.

Two leading manufacturers were evaluated, but the team at WBOC having used Motorola Solutions products in other roles trusted the brand, they knew it would be a resilient communication tool delivering longevity for the harsh working environment it was being put into.

The first challenge in this project was creating the right infrastructure that supported WBOCs approach,   “The team at Tilbury Green Power Plant wanted to feel like they were working on their own communications network, sharing information securely with colleagues, MOTOTRBOs high encryption levels ensured this.” Explains Daniel Scotney, Sales Manager. “An advantage they also saw was that it was scalable. They knew MOTOTRBOâ„¢ could be easily expanded  to support a more demanding system in the future.”

Modern, Resilient and Adaptive Communications

Through early contractor involvement DCRS were able to successfully carry out radio propagation tests which are must for a site of this nature that will undergo continual evolvement. It was evident from the tests that they would require a boost to achieve their required coverage footprint. The backbone of this system, therefore, is controlled by state of the art MOTOTRBO™ Capacity Plus SLR5500 Repeater with a centralised antenna system giving them site-wide coverage. The client chose to store the system in a lockable rack due to the location to ensure its safety at all times.

MOTOTRBO DP4000 Series Radios

Based in their central control room the operators utilise a MOTOTRBOâ„¢ DM4600e fixed mobile which monitors all the radio traffic through the users’ radio ID and other functions such as; transmit interrupt, radio disables /enable and monitor are enabled to give the system controllers additional control.

They decided upon the MOTOTRBO™ DP4401e Atex and Non-Atex Hand portables to roll out to their teams which includes operations, electrical, mechanical and installation engineers. Due to the vast area staff can be located over the client also decide to take advantage of the MOTOTRBO™ standard safety features Lone Worker and the dedicated Emergency Orange Button which provides them with protection without raising the cost.

The intelligent audio in these two-way radios has also proven to be beneficial as they adjust their volume to fit the environment’s noise level which has given all the users seamless communication – all without a single touch of the controls allowing them to continue with their job without hindrance.

Creating time savings and satisfaction

The radio network has proven to be highly reliable in regards to maintaining critical security communications for all the teams involved being alerted to incidences early, reducing response times and risk while increasing worker and site safety.

As the site and team grow at the WBOC Site plans include man down and alarm control.
