University of Brighton Alarm Integration PhotoWith an existing MOTOTRBO digital radio system architecture spanning over seven sites, historical issues with false fire alarms and as part of the clients’ projected system growth, the team at the University of Brighton selected the UnigatewayX Alarm Management Solution to connect into their fire alarm system.

Working alongside their current fire alarm provider DCRS installed a new fire alarm integration system which has given the University a suitable filtering process that notifies all radio users of which area the alarm has been activated in, allowing for an increase in the speed of investigation and whether it requires escalation or not.

This has significantly impacted the client already by reducing the amount of fire brigade call-outs and fees. It has also ensured they have best practice in place in regards to false alarms being logged and investigated so that any patterns and trends are identified and dealt with.

The new fire alarm management system is supported within the University’s existing Service Level Agreement with DCRS which includes remote support, emergency callout and annual maintenance visits.

University of Brighton Alarm SystemWhy consider the UnigatewayX Alarm Management integration with your MOTOTRBO Radio System?
  • TOTAL CONTROL – All alarm notifications can be handled differently. Distributed to the most appropriate radio/group, for the quickest response.
  • NEVER MISS A MESSAGE – Automatically sent to the primary group, no response, the alarm message will then be sent to the backup group. Still no answer? The alert can be sent to all radios and via SMS
  • NO DISPLAY, NO PROBLEM – Reminders and notifications sent as a text message or voice notification, giving you the freedom to choose the device it is delivered to (radio, mobile phone, tablet, workstation)
  • REDUCE AND AVOID FALSE ALARMS – Delayed alarm: Containing the problem or discovering a false alarm before evacuation. When a sensor is triggered this starts a timer, and the alert is sent to trained personnel, allowing time to investigate before escalating to a full alarm.

East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service*  calls upon companies to help them reduce false fire alarms

Reduce false alarms .pngIn Brighton one in five of all calls to East Sussex Fire and Rescue – almost 40 a week – were false alarms in Brighton & Hove during 2016/17, that equates to 1,913 false alarms in 2016-17, of those 1,359 were automatic fire alarms.

They advise false alarms divert their crews from real emergencies. If you have an alarm, you can help reduce false alarms.

  • Remember, fire alarm systems are there to alert occupants to the fact that there may be a fire and depending on your fire risk assessment and emergency plans. It is normally appropriate to investigate first and only to call the Fire Service if / when there are any signs to indicate that there is actually a fire.
  • If you have an automatic alarm system, make sure it is installed properly, that you know how it works and it is serviced regularly by a competent person. The British Standards Institute’s BS 5839 has recommendations for the planning, design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of these systems. If these are followed, a false alarm issue is unlikely to occur.
  • Best practice requires that false alarms are logged and investigated so that any patterns and trends are identified and dealt with.
  • Be aware that steam and dust can trigger alarms and take precautions when possible.
  • Ensure staff and/or residents know what to do when the alarm goes off.
  • If you do have a fire, please call 999 immediately. Please do not put yourself at risk and only attempt to use any extinguisher if trained and it is safe to do so.
