Introduction
Somerset Armed Forces Day (SAFD) is a major free-entry, family-friendly event celebrating the nation’s service personnel. Stewart, an Armed Forces Veteran and show manager, had run SAFD in 2024 and 2025. In 2023, the event had no dedicated supplier for handheld radios, relying instead on promises from volunteers. This made coordinating such a large-scale show challenging and hindered efficiency.
The Challenge
With tens of thousands of attendees and multiple stakeholders – including police, security teams, medical services, and volunteers – clear and reliable radio communication was essential. Stewart needed a solution that ensured smooth operational coordination and rapid response capability across the event site. Previous arrangements had proven inconsistent, creating stress and inefficiencies during the show.
Our Solution
In preparation for SAFD 2025, Stewart approached DCRS after researching several suppliers. We worked closely with him to understand the event’s unique requirements, providing clear guidance and practical recommendations. After discussing options and agreeing on a plan, the team hired our high-quality handheld radios, which were easy to use, reliable, and suitable for the scale of the event. Our pre-hire support ensured Stewart and his team were confident in their setup, and delivery and collection were arranged at mutually convenient times.
Results
Once the system was in place, communications ran seamlessly, enabling Stewart and his team to coordinate every aspect of the event efficiently. Stewart shared:
“Our SAFD 25 saw a record entry of over 41 thousand people to Vivary Park, Taunton. Our radio communications again were absolutely beneficial in allowing us to facilitate a smooth, successful event. Their pre-hire support is exceptionally helpful, and staff understanding of needs and restrictions, delivery, and collection all went exactly as arranged.”
He added:
“I have no hesitation in recommending DCRS to any event organiser. Good communications on the day via radios certainly aids the safety and security of the event, its attendees, volunteers, and statutory public sector support services. Any Event Management Plan submitted will be enhanced by stating that radios are contracted in from a professional service – DCRS are certainly a great asset to have on board.”
Conclusion
Working with SAFD has been a rewarding experience for DCRS. Supporting such a large and meaningful event not only reinforced the importance of reliable communications for public safety but also built a strong working relationship with Stewart and the SAFD team. We look forward to continuing to support the event in future years, ensuring every show runs smoothly and safely.
